MacroMind Media Rethinks Mental Health Education #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek2018

95 percent of mental health education programs in North America are delivered in bricks and mortar settings, restricting their reach to those in attendance. Most of these programs are didactic, costly, time intensive, and not built for today’s learners. If You Want To Launch A New Company, Head North To Toronto

Thinking about launching a new company? Canada might just be the place for you. Last June, I talked about what the country is doing for the AI scene. Now I’m going to share the secret sauce behind Toronto’s—and, more broadly, Ontario’s—innovation growth.

Recently, I attended an “Open Mic” session for startups just outside of Toronto. A groups of entrepreneurs, private investors, business leaders and others involved in the startup scene were brought together by the Haltech Innovation Center for some networking and pizza. The pièce de résistance of the evening was the showcase of talented entrepreneurs pitching their companies.

Though that may sound pretty standard for a startup networking event, what really set it apart was the personal involvement of Haltech President and CEO, Rina Carlini and Senior Manager of Business Innovation Services, Kevin Ming. The two spent the evening acting a match-makers, introducing companies to potential investors and partners. This personal touch fueled some serious relationship building.

This type of support and enthusiasm for the local startup community can be felt and seen all across Ontario. For example, Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs (ONE), created by the government, supports more than 130 not-for-profit organizations (including Haltech) across Ontario to help innovations. Its mission is to support businesses at all stages of growth, from researchers with promising new ideas to companies launching their products. Just like Carlini and Ming at the “Open Mic” event, the ONE partners help match startups with the resources they need to succeed—and there are some pretty incredible resources in the region.

The province of Ontario has 49 incubators and accelerators, all connected through the ONE. That includes 18 regional innovation centers (RICs), such as Haltech, MaRS, Communitech and Invest Ottawa, that are all staffed with advisors and mentors who help startups commercialize their ideas. According to a fall 2017 report on the ONE, the network has helped more than 5,600 Ontario entrepreneurs open new businesses. Very impressive!

For entrepreneurs needing support on the R&D front, the news from Toronto is really good. In addition to a significantly lower cost of R&D than in other major startup hubs in North America, such as Silicon Valley, New York or Boston, the Canadian government provides refunds on R&D investments. This refund can be as much as 65% of the R&D cost. That’s a huge benefit for startups.

Beyond that, the presence of other major technology companies in the region breeds opportunity for young companies. Google, FaceBook, Shopify, Research in Motion and more have all set up offices in the Toronto/Waterloo/Hamilton tech corridor.

The idea for a company can come from anywhere, but the resources to turn that idea into a real company are not always so easy to come by. That’s the main value of a community coming together to support new businesses. I’ve seen many great ideas fail because an entrepreneur doesn’t know how to create a true business plan and understand the market. I’ve also seen business-oriented entrepreneurs fail because they don’t have the wherewithal to research and develop their product.

Toronto has the support and resources for startups, and much of it is thanks to the ONE. The ONE members are not only focused on supporting new businesses. They believe that there is a bigger value in developing an entrepreneurial culture and fostering innovation skills among the youth. There’s also a value in connecting “newbies” with those who have done it before. Individual startups may or may not succeed, but the spirit of entrepreneurship will last for a long time if truly fostered.

Toronto, and the broader in Canada, have laid the groundwork for their 20-year plan to drive innovation . They are strategically implementing this plan through strong support for entrepreneurs and the startup community. I believe their hard work is going to pay off—and it makes the country worth looking at for a launching place for your new company. So, if you’re pondering that great new idea and you want to be surrounded by startup resources, head north. You’ll get a big Canadian welcome and lots of support.

When considering starting your new business and new life in Toronto, high on your list of things to do is take a look at the real estate offerings for the city. A good first point of call would be homeads who list many homes on the market.

Helping Tech Companies Grow And Scale: Look To Ontario’s Regional Innovation Centres

The Sky Guys, an Ontario business, received a lot of its help from regional innovation centres. RICs are becoming a resourceful outlets to help grow local businesses.

When Canadian tech companies scale up, the challenges they face can seem sky high.

They must make sure there’s a big enough market for their idea, find those customers, recruit skilled employees, and raise enough money to fund growth of the business. Many would benefit from the advice of experienced entrepreneurs to help navigate these issues and accelerate growth.

That’s where business accelerators like Haltech Regional Innovation Centre comes in. A non-profit member of the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs (ONE) organization and funded by the Ontario government, Haltech is one of 18 regional innovation centres across the province. With a new main office at TechPlace in Burlington and a community office at the Milton Innovation Centre, Haltech works with tech companies in Halton Region and across the GTA who are looking to accelerate innovation and grow their business.

Haltech offers a number of free services to companies that qualify. Its services include advising on raising capital, funding grants, sales and marketing to hiring skilled talent, market research, and business mentorship. In the past five years, Haltech has supported over 700 tech companies, as well as organized pitch exhibitions, networking events, and many learning workshops for entrepreneurs.

“Haltech also helps companies access much-needed early-stage funding from government funding grants, angels, and VC investment,” says Haltech President and CEO Rina Carlini.

The Haltech team includes five entrepreneurs-in-residence and many volunteer startup mentors, all of whom are experienced entrepreneurs or business executives at other tech companies. The team is supporting a portfolio of 120+ tech companies, which are mainly startups and growth companies who are ready to scale.

“In the past year alone, our portfolio companies have secured over $750,000 in government grants and over $6 million dollars in private sector investment,” says Carlini, adding that their growth helped create 110 new jobs.

Helping companies get off the ground

When The Sky Guys was introduced to Haltech, the Oakville-based drone technology company had 10 employees. The Sky Guys has since doubled that number, and anticipates re-doubling it again by the end of 2017, according to the company’s President and CEO, Adam Sax.

The company deploys state-of-the-art drone technology to capture data and solve problems for their clients, from photos and video used in real estate marketing to unmanned inspection of assets like flare stacks, pipelines and cell towers, to creating fully 3D models of land and infrastructure used for surveying.

Since being founded in early 2015, The Sky Guys has grown nationally and abroad, serving over 600 clients such as General Motors, Samsung, Shell, CBRE, Canada Post, Nike, and Sportsnet.

The Sky Guys’ research and development arm, Defiant Labs, is working on an unmanned aerial vehicle they’re calling the DX-3, which can potentially fly its sensors and high-resolution cameras over a range of 1,800 kilometres and use artificial intelligence to produce real-time analytics. The DX-3 will take off vertically — no need for a runway.

Today, The Sky Guys sends out drones that cover 70 percent of the GTA’s real estate developments. Not bad for a company with its origins, like so many tech startups, in the founder’s apartment.

Haltech’s free advisory support — in particular, advocating The Sky Guys to investors, industry collaborators, government funding agencies, and national innovation awards — has been instrumental in growing the company, according to Sax.

“It’s been like having a sales force working for us with no strings attached,” he says. Haltech helped The Sky Guys obtain millions of dollars in external funding and offered thousands of dollars of free market research, as well as online exposure and introductions to prospective business partners and investors. With Haltech’s help, The Sky Guys was able to capitalize on a “first mover advantage,” and now the majority of drones flying overhead in Canada were sent into the air by The Sky Guys..

Cellbie Wins Top Prize at Mobile Carriers Show Start-up Showcase

Mobile Carriers Show, Las Vegas, April 7, 2017 – Competitive Carriers Association’s (CCA) Mobile Carriers Show (MCS) today announced Cellbie as the winner of its start-up showcase competition. Seven companies participated in the showcase session – pitching their products and services to competitive carrier executives, technology leaders and MCS attendees.
